We are delighted to welcome Abi as Access Development Manager. She has experience of 8 years in local government and combines technical and analytical knowledge with a practical and personal flair. She has been with The Access Company since February 2008.
She will be looking after the “London Access Management System” (LAMS), as part of the Mayor’s vision for making London one of the most walk-friendly cities in Europe by 2015. She passionately believes in walking and cycling, especially for short local journeys, as environmentally-sustainable (and healthy!) ways of getting about.
She first worked as an area Rights of Way officer in Kent, and then moved into Rights of Way Improvement Plans (ROWIPs). Abi completed the research elements of Kent’s ROWIP, before moving to Cumbria to write and publish their ROWIP.
She has published articles on planning for open access implementation and on a comparison of countryside access between England and Canada, as well as guest lecturing for Manchester Metropolitan University.
With 2 years of living in France, teaching English conversation & British civilisation, Abi also brings languages to The Access Company. As well as fluent français, she can also speak a bachen o Cymraeg, un poco del Español and am bissen Deutsch. She also has a vast experience of leading groups of international volunteers on practical footpath working holidays – “intensive and rewarding”.
Abi lives in Heddon on the Wall, near Newcastle with her boyfriend and their pet rabbit. In her spare time, Abi enjoys a bit of wildlife gardening, and is even found sometimes wielding a billhook and hedgelaying! She also enjoys DIY, cooking and yoga.
