Signage and Waymarking audit and advice

Client: Warwickshire County Council

Summary:

We carried out an audit of signage on public rights of way and unclassified county roads for Warwickshire CC, and made recommendations on how it could be improved.

The problem:

WCC identified the need to improve their signage of public rights of way and unclassified county roads in their ROWIP.

WCC were looking for advice on :

  • whether their existing signage met the needs of the DDA
  • how it could be improved to meet the needs of different user groups
  • advice on dealing with specific issues including fading waymarkers, waymarking promoted routes, and signing UCRs.

Our input:

We employed The Dog Rose Trust to audit existing signage for DDA compliance. They used their extensive understanding of the needs of the disabled to make recommenadtions on what improvements were requried, and what features worked well and which didn't.

We spoke to local authority ROW officers, path managers and nantional park staff to determine what is current good practice. We researched into new products and recommended suppliers, and policies and approaches for reducing damage and vandalism.

We made recommendations on how WCC could prioritise routes to ensure improvements were made in the most effective way.

The result:

WCC have an independant assessment of their signage, and practical advice on how it can be improved to help locals and visitors find their way around the county.
